Braids intrigue me. I once learned how to fishtail braid on a theatre bus, but I promptly forgot it and haven’t remembered how since. During my sorority’s recruitment, I was frequently summoned into people’s rooms to give them side braids. Side braids are most effective at getting rid of bangs that you’re constantly playing with or that are getting too long. I also used to be fascinated with the braided updo that Izzie had on one episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

What’s your favorite way to wear a braid? Leave a comment and tell me all about it!

Pie day, pie day!

by

Thursdays have become Pie Days in B’s apartment.

This has led to several weekly occurrences, one of which being pie appearing in the oven every Thursday, and another one of which being me running up and down the hallways singing “Pie day, pie day, gotta get down on pie day!” to the tune of Rebecca Black’s Friday.

The first Pie Day was celebrated with a wonderfully mediocre pumpkin pie with a lattice crust. Last week’s Pie Day featured apple pie with a lattice crust, which created some divisions in the house. B likes his apple pie with Braeburn apples. I am a Granny Smith apple + one-cup-of-sugar-to-counter-the-tartness purist. I actually detailed this argument in a job interview last week. Not really sure if it was appropriate or not, but it got a chuckle. And I’m great about talking food. As you all know.

What should this week’s pie be, Tumblr-verse?!

Pumpkin Pie Problems

by

I was so, so ashamed.

I stood in front of the oven, watching my pie of failure bake shamefully in the oven. The crust looked burnt. The pumpkin looked too jiggly.

I had never made such a mistake.

I couldn’t even blame it on outside forces, like a shoddy oven.

Me, being silly, distracted, and far too excited to make a pumpkin pie only gave the can of pumpkin with the recipe a glance. It told me to pour the entire can into the pie shell, and so I did.

I proceeded to pour the entire can of condensed milk in as well, which is where my problem started.

It only took the mix overflowing from the pie shell to indicate to me that I had made an error.

Apparently I was supposed to only put in 2/3 of a cup of condensed milk.

That’s LESS THAN HALF OF THE CAN, PEOPLE.

I poured some out, trying to limit the amount of pumpkin that flowed.

The pie made it out of the oven just fine. It was just a little too mushy.

But the shame will last forever.

What’s the worst baking mistake you’ve ever made?

chocolate breakfast rolls.

Chocolate and breakfast.

The two don’t really seem to go together. My mom never let ME eat chocolate with/for breakfast (but in college, I have been known to have pie for breakfast).

Panera, however, has an excellent chocolate chip bagel. I did feel a little guilty consuming a traditional dessert food so early in the morning, but…

Who says a grown adult can’t have whatever she wants for breakfast?!

The Office of Letters and Light organizes events where children and adults find the inspiration, encouragement, and structure they need to achieve their creative potential. One such event, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), takes place all November—which means it starts today! NaNoWriMo challenges you to write a 50,000-word novel, from scratch, in the month of November. Participants exchange advice and writing tips on the web and through group write-ins held in coffeeshops, living rooms, and libraries all around the world. Last year, 200,500 people took part!

Oh, NaNoWriMo. I did NaNo for two or three amazing, crazy, fast-paced years. Producing 50,000 words in 30 days seems like insanity, and it really is. The first year was the only year I finished, and the novel I wrote was….decent? Decent. For a 15 year old. I self-published it on Lulu and gave it to my friends for graduation, who all adored it.

Doing NaNo really showed me that writing really is opening a vein and pouring it on the page.

If you’re considering doing it, I encourage you to wholeheartedly.

Top 10 Things I Did on Halloween

by

1. Proctored two hours of study hall for my sorority.

2. Ate Starburst that my mom sent me.

3. Ate candy corn that B’s mom sent him.

4. Went to the best buffet ever (my school cafeteria, no lie) with one of my sisters.

5. Went to a 3 hour night class.

6. Crafted like a champ.

7. Celebrated my nine month anniversary with B on Facebook, like modern couples do.

8. Planned an apple pie baking contest.

9. Took a shower (which is really an achievement when you live the life that I lead).

10. Took a nap.

No tricks. A few treats. No costumes. What a lame mellow Halloween.
