Short, sweet, and to the point running post today since its Valentines Day and my Mac has bit the dust (blogging from an iPad is hard, y’all. Ultimate first world problem).

I’m running a 10k in March! My first ever 10k through one of my favorite cities (what up, RVA!) should be magical. Look for me at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10k this spring!

Feeling Dotty

My aunt bought me this adorable new dress from Nordstrom Rack last month, and it’s just gotten nice enough for me to wear it (even with tights). I was looking for a dress that could be work appropriate but still adorable, hence the long sleeves and delicate polka-dots.

Aaaaaand for the silly picture that shows off my wild tights! Don’t worry, guys, I won’t be wearing these to work.

Minty Fresh

by

Last week, I was looking for something sweet to make and send B’s brother because he is a freshman in college and sick with mono. I remembered that he liked mint chocolate chip ice cream, so I found this recipe from Little Dairy on the Prairie on ever-faithful Pinterest.

The batter was straight-up luscious. Strangely (and awesomely), it was the texture of ice cream after I mixed all of the goodies up. And the real peppermint oil that was swirled in made them smell and taste so fresh and so tasty. (That was a so fresh and so clean joke, sorry it failed).

You may ask how they tasted? I leave you with this screenshotted Snapchat:

Pinning on a number is bold. It says, yes, I am a runner. It speaks to the idea of getting out there, putting ourselves out there, and the glory of the try. The simple act, pin through fabric, through paper, clasp, repeat — sometimes in life we get to choose our own labels.

I Said, Brrr, It’s Cold Out There: Running in Cold Weather

by

(Hope you guys all got my sweet Bring it On reference in the post title.)

The above picture was the view outside my window this morning. As you can see, we’ve had a little snow lately. I live in Norman, Oklahoma, which has experienced sub-freezing temperatures for what seems like forever (but has probably only been a week or so). Usually I’m a big fan of snow days, but I’ve been trying to train for my third half-marathon and it has not been going according to plan.

Every training cycle I studiously mark each run in my planner, scaling up to 10 miles two weeks before the race. Basically all of my scheduled outdoor long runs have not occurred, thanks to this lovely snow and ice that coats my sidewalks. I’ve been trying to catch up on the treadmill, but it’s so difficult both mentally and physically to do these long, slow runs on a treadmill. Can you imagine running for two hours basically in place?! I’m not sure if TLC has enough episodes of trash TV to get me through that kind of struggle.

Do you have any tips for training in cold weather? I’m sure runners who experience this kind of weather all of the time are laughing at me, but it’s a real challenge for this Texas born runner!

5 Pieces of Clothing Every Girl Should Own

by

I know we all hate listicles (list-articles), but really, this is a necessary evil. Here are 5 things you should go to the mall and purchase now:

1. Nude tank top

It’s hard to express how totally necessary this is. While a nude bandeau is sometimes appropriate to wear under sheer tops, I usually go for my nude tank top when wearing sheer blouses to class or (especially) work. I’m all about going a little “fun” when out with friends, but sheer tops are NEVER work appropriate! And this tank costs approximately $5 at Forever 21.

2. Sports bra

I can hear all my non-runner people out there saying, “Why do I need the perfect sports bra? Exercise is the worst!” To which I say: “You’re just not doing the right kind of exercise!” with a wink. But I digress. A good sports bra that is comfortable and supportive is essential for a variety of uses, not just going for a jog. Maybe your friends want to play a round of kickball in the field next to your apartment. Maybe you’re going on a road trip and want to relax in the car, but also be ready to go hiking when you get to your destination of choice. Maybe you are just lazy and want to be comfortable for class. Find the right style and size for you, and buy a million of them. I have 5 of the above bra (found at Target).

3. Cozy sweatshirt

A well-worn sweatshirt, preferably repping your college or sports team of choice, is always a good piece of clothing to have. I have a hunter green sweatshirt from my sorority that I have been wearing almost every day this week due to the extreme cold. While I don’t recommend wearing a sweatshirt to the bar, obviously, for nights at home drinking tea and watching reality television, this is necessary.

4. Scarf that goes with everything

Maybe it’s the sub-freezing temperatures outside that are talking to me, but I am all about a versatile scarf lately. Scarves can be taken from going with Piece of Clothing #3 to going with Piece of Clothing #5. From lazy days at school to a way to keep your neck toasty as you walk from the parking lot to the door at work, a versatile scarf, preferably a circle/infinity scarf, is recommended for all. Colors I love: dark grey, mustard yellow, cobalt blue.

5. Black dress pants

This one is applicable for ladies and gentlemen. Everyone needs a pair of black slacks (or even a full suit) that makes them feel like a million bucks. Like you’re the CEO of Power Outfits, Incorporated. The pants I love are from The Limited. Find your power pants. Wear them a lot. Maybe buy two pairs.

Ch-ch-changes

With a new year comes new adventures, right? Not just for people, apparently! Cuppycakes will be undergoing a new adventure in this new year, and I am so excited to share it with you…

…soon. But not yet.

One change that I can tell you about is the addition of a posting calendar. Each week, I will post about a certain thing on a certain day. That way you will know what to look for each week and will never miss one riveting word of my epic entries.

Mondays will be food posts,

Wednesdays will be fashion posts,

and Fridays will be fitness posts.

Other days of the week will be added as I get used to this schedule. Best thing about it is that if I or you hate it, it ends!

What I Ate: a delicious breakfast creation. Lemon-rosemary bread from the Hoot and the Howl, avocado, and a gooey fried egg. It required a knife and fork. It was luscious.

Photo of the Day: a quick selfie from a rather loud colored gym outfit I wore last week. Sorry for the lack of posts, I’m working on a massive Cuppycakes redesign that should be rolling out around Valentines Day!
